Important Updates for Visitors to Spring Mountains National Recreation Area

As you plan on visiting Mount Charleston this year, pay attention to some important updates regarding occupancy and use regulations within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, specifically the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.

Stay safe!

To safeguard both visitors and the environment, building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire is now strictly prohibited within a one-mile perimeter of various communities and sites, including:

  1. Upper Kyle and Lee Canyons and other areas west of Highway 158.

  2. Cold Creek Community, including the Pond Area.

  3. Mountain Springs Community.

  4. Trout Canyon Community.

  5. Lovell Canyon Community.

  6. Coal Springs Community.

Exemptions for Specific Situations

While these prohibitions are in place, certain exemptions apply to ensure that responsible recreational activities can still take place. Exempted individuals include:

  1. Persons utilizing fires, campfires, or stove fires in developed recreation sites.

  2. Individuals using stoves or barbecues solely fueled by petroleum or LPG fuels capable of being turned off.

  3. Those possessing a permit specifically authorizing the prohibited acts.

  4. Federal, State, or local officers or members of organized rescue or firefighting forces while performing official duties.

Consequences of Violation

Violation of these prohibitions is considered a class B misdemeanor, punishable by fines of up to $5,000.00 for individuals or $10,000.00 for organizations and/or imprisonment.
